The real cost of hiring a developer is the month you wait to see anything

You hire someone. You pay a deposit. Then, for weeks, nothing happens that you can actually hold.

There are calls. A discovery document. A Figma link. A board slowly filling with tickets. What you do not have is an app you can open on your own phone. That gap, between the day you pay and the day you first see something real running, is where most of the stress in a software project lives. It is also the part nobody warns you about.

Weeks is the optimistic number

I am not exaggerating the wait. The numbers back it up. A developer joining a project commonly takes three to six months to reach full productivity, and six to twelve months or more on a complex app. That is the ramp before the output you are paying for arrives at full speed. Even a sharp contractor who hits the ground running rarely puts working software in your hands in the first couple of weeks.

The industry's own best advice agrees. The first principle of the Agile Manifesto is early and continuous delivery of working software, and even that principle frames "frequently" as "a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale." So the gold standard, the thing every modern team aspires to, is still measured in weeks at best.

Why does it take that long? Discovery. Environment setup. Scoping documents. Then the part that quietly eats the calendar: waiting on you for feedback, approvals, assets, and access, which is consistently the biggest cause of freelance project delays. Add the handoffs between an account manager, a project manager, and the person who actually writes the code, and each one adds hours of latency before anyone ships a line.

The wait is not just slow, it is risky

A long gap before you see working software is not only annoying. It is expensive in a way that does not show up on the invoice.

You cannot course-correct on something you cannot see. While you wait, small misalignments compound silently. Everyone is busy, everyone assumes the plan is right, and the assumptions get baked in. By the time a build finally lands, changing direction means unpicking weeks of work, so it rarely happens. The common advice from people who manage these projects is blunt: do not allow weeks or months of development with no visible results. Insist on small steps you can see.

I agree with that advice. I just take it further than most.

What I do instead: a working app on your device by tonight

I run the work as a single day. We talk in the morning, I build during the day, and by the end of it you have a native app installed on your own phone, plus the source code. Not a mockup. Not a clickable prototype trapped in a browser tab. A real Swift or Kotlin app running on real hardware, yours to keep.

That is possible because of three things. Seventeen years of writing native mobile code, so I am not learning the platform on your time. AI in the loop, which removes a lot of the slow mechanical work. And a direct line, with no agency layer between you and the developer, so the morning conversation turns into afternoon code without a relay of emails.

I want to be honest about what one day is and is not. It is not the finished product with every feature, every edge case, and a polished settings screen. It is a real, installable app that does the core thing you came for, the thing you can hold, show to a colleague or an investor, and react to. In other words, it is exactly what the whole industry agrees you should get early in a project. I just hand it to you on day one instead of week six.

Why this changes the decision you are making

When you hire the usual way, you commit money and weeks on the strength of a promise and a slide deck. You find out whether it was a good idea a month later.

When the first day ends with an app in your hand, you decide what happens next with the actual thing in front of you. If it is right, we keep going and you already have a working base. If it is not, you have spent one day, not a month and a deposit. Your risk is capped at a single day of work, which is about as low as software gets.

That is the whole point. The month you normally spend waiting is the most uncomfortable part of hiring a developer, and it is the part I remove.
